I am sick
First of all, we are sorry that you are not feeling well! Unfortunately, medical care is very expensive in the United States, so please be careful about the method of treatment you choose.
First Step
Please visit our Campus Health Center and talk to the registered nurse on duty. The Campus Health Center is located on the 3rd floor of Mabee Student Center. Nurse Debbie can give you advice and help you decide what the best treatment for your illness is. Best of all, the Campus Health Center is free to ͬ³Ç¿ìÔ¼ students.
At night or on the weekend
Please check in with your Resident Assistant or Resident Director to determine if you need to see a doctor immediately.
Americans Do This
Because it is so expensive to see a doctor in America, we have a huge variety of medicine available to purchase at local stores such as Wal-Mart or HEB. These medicines are safe, some are organic or herbal, and they can help you get over a cold or allergies easily and cheaply. Please ask Nurse Debbie to recommend good medicine from Wal-Mart for you. Americans buy their own medicine all the time; it’s very convenient and quick.
Serious Illness
We know that you may have a serious illness. Again, visit our Campus Health Center first to get an idea of what kind of doctor you may need to see. International Student Services can help you make an appointment at a Belton Clinic if necessary. You will be expected to pay for medical services at the time you go to the doctor. If you have medical insurance, you will be given a bill to submit to your insurance company for repayment to you, but you still have to pay the clinic first.
Emergency Room
This is the MOST expensive form of treatment in America. Please go to the Emergency Room only in case of real emergency. The best advice is to ask your Resident Assistant or American friend if they think you are in an emergency state. Be sure to tell your friend if you have insurance or not! No insurance is going to result in a huge bill of thousands of dollars. We want you to seek care when you need it, but we also want you to make good choices about your care.
Take Care of Yourself!
The best way to stay well is to eat healthy foods, exercise, and get enough sleep! It’s very stressful to be a college student – especially one who is far from home. Be nice to your body and it will stay healthy and happy!
